A magazine for connected thinking
The Common Thread began in 2021, when founder Clara Venn grew tired of reading important ideas reduced to rushed headlines. She invited a science teacher, a city planner and a food writer to share one modest question each week: what does this idea change in ordinary life? The project started as a small email shared among friends and became an independent publication built around patient reporting.
Our mission is to make complex subjects useful without making them simplistic. We write about technology, culture, science, places and practical habits, looking for the human decisions underneath large trends. We do not chase outrage, publish anonymous claims or pretend uncertainty is weakness.
Our goals
- Explain important terms in clear, respectful language.
- Connect personal experience with wider systems.
- Give readers practical ways to test an idea.
- Support curiosity across age, background and profession.
The small team
Clara Venn is editor and founder. Daniel Okafor checks research and asks difficult questions about evidence. Mei Santos shapes the visual language and accessibility standards. Ruth Calder coordinates community correspondence and corrections.
What we have learned
In five years, we have published more than 420 essays, worked with 86 contributors and welcomed readers from 47 countries. Our workshops have helped 1,300 people practice source-checking and public storytelling. Those numbers are encouraging, but the messages we remember are smaller: a reader planting shade trees, repairing a lamp or asking a better question at work. That is the scale at which ideas become durable.
